Shalekhet (Fallen Leaves), by Menashe Kadishman
An art installation from the Jewish Museum in Berlin. It’s literally over ten thousand metal faces, piled on the floor. You can walk on them, and the section of the room ends in a dark cave-y overhang.
I think this one will be firmly engraved in my memory for a while. The artist dedicated the faces to the victims of war and violence. They make a loud clanging sound when you step on them, and you can hear it two rooms down. All the faces are slightly different, but most of them look like they’re screaming, and someone mentioned the lumpy bits of the metal make it seem like some are crying too. And walking on it and hearing the sound under your feet… it’s unnerving.
Beautiful, in a tragic way
They have some of these in the Jersusalem memorial too. It just stops your heart when you see them.
